1. Warnings

  • Don’t buy damaged cans (with dents in). Their contents may be spoiled.
  • Make sure that any packets have not been opened or tampered with
  • Never buy frozen foods covered with frost, it has very likely been defrosted and re-frozen
  • Check the expiry dates on perishable foods carefully; the fresher ones usually are towards the back of the shelf.

2. Buying Rice

  • Quick Cook rice is more expensive and less nutritious than white rice
  • Brown rice is even more nutritious but takes longer to cook
  • Don’t waste money on packets of flavoured rice; Cook plain rice together with your own choice of herbs and spices.

3. Dairy Products

  • Compare the price of eggs based on their size; generally you’ll get better value for money by buying the larger size
  • At times you can save money by buying plain cottage cheese and plain unflavoured yogurt. You can add a fresh cup of fruit or fresh herbs at home to make up your own flavour, and it will be healthier.
